What is Kundalini?

Kundalini is the energy of Divine consciousness that exists within every human being.  It is also the creative energy that manifests the diversity of the entire universe.  We generally perceive our individuality and the larger cosmos as separate, and yet the most intimate and deepest essence of our own nature is not different from the larger cosmic, divine consciousness, and this can be directly experienced.

What happens in a Kundalini meditation class?

This class follows the tradition of shaktipat transmission. The energy of Shakti, which is the energy of consciousness, resonates with your own kundalini energy, which in turns assists in its arousal. Shakti moves through the teacher and creates a resonance within the student. This is done through open-eyed meditation, gentle, non-invasive touch, and the more traditionally known closed-eyed meditation.

Is this the same as Kundalini yoga?

This class is different from Kundalini yoga.  We do not perform asanas (body postures) and we have only one, simple breathing technique for focusing in during meditation.  We tune in deeply to the subtle body, the flow of energy running through us, but we do so by sitting very quietly.  Our goal is to feel the dynamics between the flow of the energy in the subtle body, the deep spiritual presence of kundalini, and the profound potency of pure, still, consciousness, simultaneously!
